The Volcano Art Center hula kahiko series will continue on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 10:30 a.m. with a performance by Na Kumu hula Leilehua Yuen and Manu Josiah. The event is in an informance format, which allows for more interaction between the kumu, the halau members and the audience than would normally take place during a performance-only event.
The Volcano Art Center hula kahiko series will continue on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 10:30 a.m. with a performance by Na Kumu hula Leilehua Yuen and Manu Josiah. The event is in an informance format, which allows for more interaction between the kumu, the halau members and the audience than would normally take place during a performance-only event.
Manu Josiah and Leilehua Yuen are known for their informances, in which they blend storytelling, science, chant, and hula to create a journey through Hawaiian history and culture.
Leilehua and Manu admire each other’s love of and respect for their island home. This performance is part of a year-round series sponsored by the Volcano Art Center. For the series, hula halau from across Hawai`i and beyond are invited to perform each month in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (platform) in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
This special site was realized through the vision of (the late) pre-eminent hula master Edith Kanaka`ole, kumu hula of Halau `o Kekuhi. The kahua hula is located just a short walking distance from the Volcano Art Gallery in an area known as Kaauea. This sacred spot affords the kumu and haumana (student) a pristine view into Halama`uma`u, home of goddess Pelehonuamea.
The Nov. 15 performance will be presented authentically in an outdoor setting, rain or shine without electronic amplification. Audience members are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mats. In case of inclement weather, this event will be held in the lobby of the Volcano House Hotel. National Park entrance fees apply.
